Simon thought she was CRAZY to sing a Hymn without any music. Then he heard her SING!

It is hard enough to sing in front of millions of viewers, but it is even harder without the backing of music accompaniment. So daunting is it, that when Chloe Page announces that she will sing a cappella, Simon calls her a brave girl. She then ups the ante by singing one of the most beloved hymns of all time – Amazing Grace.

Most people have a strong emotional connection to this song. It is a pillar of Christianity. Singing it takes a lot of bravery, because it is so adored and so well known. It is thought to have been recorded on over 11,000 albums and performed over 10 million times in a single year.

Almost every great musician has a rendition of the great hymn – from U2 to Johnny Cash to Aretha Franklin. Christian artist Chris Tomlin was asked to add a stanza to accompany the release of the song in coordination with the release of a movie about the song’s author, John Newton. Tomlin’s now-well-known portion of the song includes the words, “My chains are gone, I’ve been set free. My God, my Savior, has ransomed me.” The song appeared on Tomlin’s 2006 album, “See the morning.” It went gold within 16 months of release.

The interesting thing is that one of the world’s most beautiful songs was written by a man who did not see the world as beautiful – until Jesus came into his life. The hymn was first published in 1779. Newton was a poet and English sailor, having joined his father at sea when he was 11. He worked with his father on the ships, served in the Royal Navy, and, eventually, ended up indentured in Western Africa to an abusive slave-owner. Upon his rescue, after encountering a near shipwreck and then violent illness, he began to call out to God. But, he wouldn’t truly give his life to God for a number of years – after serving as the captain of slave ships.

He penned the song as a poem, originally titled, “Faith’s Review and Expectation”; it soon became known by its opening words, “Amazing Grace.” Understanding Newton’s story, give deeper meaning to the words, “that saved a wretch like me.”

Newton knew of God’s amazing grace. And through the Bible, we do, too.

Dr. Tabor Shares Three Bible Verses On God’s Grace

1. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14b)

2. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

3. Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. (2 Peter 1:2)

With such a big message and such a big song, how is Chloe’s performance? Her nerves take over at the beginning – leading to fast chatter. One judge gives her sound advice, and she calms herself. In the end, she leaves the judges shaking their heads. Did they like it or not? Does she do what it takes to make it to a coveted chair? Watch and find out!

Share if you love Amazing Grace!
