Between 8 to 12 million Americans have claimed that angels have visited them as they face death. In fact, these near-death experiences, NDEs as they are called, are increasingly common, and life changing for the people who encounter these situations. While we call these near-death experiences, the truth is that many people are actually, biologically dead. Somehow, however, there is not a total death experience. Many claim that they are given a choice. Many no longer fear death after getting a glimpse of the afterlife. And many know, without a shadow of a doubt, that there is eternal life after death.
We learn from Jesus himself that there is life after death, and those who believe in him will spend eternity with him. The thief on the cross asked Jesus to remember him, and Jesus told the thief that he would be with him in Paradise that very day (Luke 23:39-43).
After a stroke in 2013, Republican Senator Mark Kirk said he was visited by three angels, who asked if he wanted to go with them. He said he answered, “No.”
Can angels really visit us, like Senator Kirk said? What does the Bible say?
Dr. Tabor shares three Bible verses about the role of angels.
Angels are messengers – The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to give her God’s message: she was to have a son and name him Jesus (Luke 1:26-38). Gabriel also appeared to Zechariah the priest, telling him that his wife, Elizabeth, would become pregnant after years of not being able to have a child. Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist the following year (Luke 1:19). Acts 12 tells us that an angel came to Paul while he was in prison to tell him to quickly wake up and leave.
Angels are ministers – After Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness – and after Satan left him, having been unsuccessful in his attempt to cause Jesus to sin – angels came and ministered to Jesus (Matthew 4:11). Angels are also sent to minister to those who follow God. Hebrews 1:14 says, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Angels carry us to heaven when we die – In the story Jesus told of the rich man and Lazarus (not the same Lazarus that Jesus brought back from the dead), Jesus makes this statement: Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried (Luke 16:22). This seems to clearly state that angels usher believers from this world into heaven at death.
So, was the angel that Colleen saw there to give a message, minister or usher Chelsea home to heaven?
