Many grew up with this portrait in their home, BUT did you KNOW it’s SHOCKING SECRET?

A little data about the acclaimed painting; The Head of Christ, additionally called the Sallman Head, is a 1940 representation painting of Jesus of Nazareth by American craftsman Warner Sallman (1892-1968). Arguably the most inspiring and beautiful work of Christian art, the Head of Christ has enjoyed billions of duplications; allowing millions of individuals to more easily conceptualize their Lord and Savior. I cannot believe what almost happened to one of the paintings in the video! What happened? You will just have to watch to find out!

Dr. Tabor’s 3 Things We Can Learn and Appreciate From Art

1. Expression. Humankind has been expressing itself through art for nearly as long as it has existed, and for good reason. Artistic expression is a foundational aspect of the human mind. It allows us to interact with the world around us in ways that mere words cannot. Consider the difference between a person describing the ocean and a beautiful painting of the beach.

2. Connectedness. Art harnesses the nearly endless resources of our imagination; connecting the world of our senses to the world of the unseen, and The Head of Christ is no exception. The product of one man’s artistic imagination, the Head of Christ has successfully connected a large portion of the church to their Lord and Savior by placing Him into the context of 20th century North America.

3. Hope through Creativity. Some of the most profound and influential artists have been Christian (C.S. Lewis is my personal favorite!). Art exists as an avenue for every person to tackle the problems of this world by imagining and actualizing its potential. Artists create worlds of perfect love, selfless service, and happy conclusions. Christian art in particular can anticipate the future realization of God’s kingdom on earth by illustrating it in the present. Consider the world of Narnia; if such a world is conceivable then perhaps it is possible, even inevitable!

When we express ourselves through art, we are participating in the creative actions of the Greatest Artist, God himself, the creator of majestic mountain ranges and picturesque sunsets. Take some time out of your day to enjoy God’s art. Tell us what you think! We can’t wait to hear from you!
