The Truth about Anger: Healthy or Harmful?

The TRUTH about Anger: Healthy or Harmful?

By Dominic Herbst

In our culture, we have come to believe that all anger is negative. We mistakenly categorize it as a sin, no matter what form it comes in. However, this is not how God sees it at all. Healthy anger is controlled and is without sin. It is the truthful and proper response that we have toward a violation against us.

The bible says in Ephesians 4:26a: ÍžBe ye angry and sin not…Íź This clearly indicates that anger, in and of itself, is not a sin.

Healthy anger is always carefully governed by our will. We must choose to express it with restraint by offering Godly rebuke and correction. A Godly, healthy anger always comes with a heart that seeks restoration and healing with our offender. This doesn’t mean that in every case it’s safe to fellowship with them– it just means that, regardless of what has happened between us, our heart does not hold bitterness towards them or feel a right for vengeance.

Unhealthy anger is called wrath and it is a sin. “Do not let the sun go down upon your wrath. Neither give place to the devil.” (Eph 4:26b-27) It is out of control and filled with destruction! Wrath or rage transforms a seven pound kitten of anger into a 700 pound roaring lion. Just as a lion is more powerful than a man, rage is more powerful than those who try to control it. When a person is overcome with wrath, their emotions will override their mind and will. Wrath flames with fire, blames with criticism, and shames with condemnation. It will bubble over with bitterness and hatred expressed from deep within the soul.

This is how it comes to pass that “A son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law is against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.” (Micah 7:6)

A person consumed by wrath has a firestorm raging in their heart and they often make victims of those they love. They tend to hold the people around them hostage in fear. This wrath seeks only vengeance with the offender, saying in effect: “If you don’t feel my pain, I’ll make you feel my pain!Íź

To be intoxicated with rage is a dangerous and frightening place to be that only becomes darker still. When wrath is allowed to abide for long periods of time and/or accelerate quickly, it invites a vile spiritual influence into the soul of the one who manifests it.

The end result of a heart of wrath that is not healed will be all manners of depression, fear, interpersonal conflict, illness, and even early death in some instances. The person will feel hopeless and inconsolable. No words will bring them comfort.

And yet, there is an answer. Wrath does not have to win.

When the person overtaken with unhealthy anger decides to turn fully back to God, they must take authority over wrath In The Name of Jesus. They must be willing to walk through the past and present violations and betrayals of those they trusted most. AND they must repent for their sin and ask forgiveness for their bitterness and hatred.
