There is an old cliché that states, “Time heals all wounds.” Have you heard that one before? Unfortunately this is not true for serious physical or emotional wounds. A wound left unattended can actually become infected. An infection in your body causes tissue and blood to become toxic, and then you become hypersensitive when touched near the wound.

Emotional trauma can have the same effect within the soul. When you are offended by another, your soul sustains a wound, which may become infected if not properly cared for. This could lead to very toxic relationships with those you care about today. Cases where a trusted parent or caregiver is the offender often result in the deepest wounds and infections within you. Those areas where you may have exhibited hypersensitivity in your response to someone’s words or actions will help you to see where you may be infected.

When I was 12 years old, I had an open wound on my arm. My mother applied a topical solution and a clean bandage with assurances that I would be fine in a few days. On the third day following, I was showing signs of hypersensitivity every time my brothers and sisters got close to me. When my mother asked why I was withdrawing and keeping to myself, I told her that my arm was hurting worse.

After a closer look, she determined that my wound was infected and that I had blood poisoning. The wound that was supposed to heal in time actually became worse with time. The infection was not only in the wound, it had not entered my bloodstream. My whole body was toxic.

Although I protested, I needed a doctor’s attention immediately. I instructed him that he could touch me anywhere, except the location of the wound. The pain was unbearable and I was afraid that he would make things worse.

After his explanation that I would need to be hospitalized with IV insertions, I relented. The doctor lanced the infection and it hurt. Next, he applied a topical solution much stronger than the one my mother had used. Then he gave me something my mother did not have, an antibiotic for the purpose of cleansing my blood from toxicity.

In a few days I was healed with only a scar to show for it. Without this cleansing, my wound would not have healed and the outcome would have been far different. My mother did her best, but she covered the wound before it was properly cleansed. No amount of time will heal infected wounds. Time only heals cleansed wounds that have been touched by the Great Physician!

What painful areas of your heart are you withholding from God today? What topics make you run for cover rather than face them every time they come up? What relationship sets you into a negative emotional tailspin that you struggle to control on a regular basis? This are important questions to consider as the answers will give you clues about where you need some healing.

Although we know that life will certainly have its ups and downs (John 16:33), and our relationships will be tested (Luke 17:1), we were never meant to live a life of defeat! On the contrary, “We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus!” (Romans 8:37).
Take your life back by pursuing a journey of healing for your soul. I would be honored to accompany you! Resources are available at Let’s get started. I look forward to seeing you there.
