A 9 year old boy fights off attack from Alligator…watch the News ReportJesus Daily
Alligator attacks are fairly rare overall. But, individual stories of tragedy can bring us grief and distress, as they remind us of the dangers associated with these often-massive creatures. With the fairly recent and heart-breaking death of a toddler in Florida in an alligator attack, we have once again tried to grapple with how to prevent such things – allowing man and nature continue to commune in safety.
Florida state statistics dating since 1948 show that the two deadliest years on record – 2001 and 2006 – each saw three alligator-attack fatalities. There have also been been multiple consecutive years during which no alligator-related deaths have occurred in the state. Infrequency of attacks, however, does not negate the tragedy for those involved in such attacks – fatal or not.
Amid stories of tragedy, though, there are stories of triumph – such as the experience of a very brave nine-year-old, James.
While swimming one day, James felt something strange on his leg. Unsure of what was happening, he reached down only to realize that the strong jaws and sharp teeth of an alligator had a grip on his small frame.
Mustering enough strength to pry the jaw open, the boy was able to get free, but a toll was taken on his body. He yelled for help and next thing he knew there was an ambulance and helicopter – all there for him. Doctors were astonished at his bravery, as they described his wounds.
You won’t believe what they pulled out of one of the wounds!!
Even James’ Dad, who admits you never know what can happen with the active child, was astonished. He tells of how he had received a text earlier in the day that sent him an important reminder.
“We need to count our blessings,” he said. He added that we should cherish the important things in life, because we don’t know what can happen in a single day.
A great reminder for us all!!
Stories like James’ are inspiring and amazing! Are there other amazing animal stories that can teach us valuable lessons? YES!
Dr. Tabor shares three AMAZING true animal stories from the Bible.
Daniel in the lion’s den (Daniel 6). Daniel was a godly man. Carried off to Babylon with his friends, he proved his diligence, his discipline and his devotion to God. His integrity earned him a reputation with King Darius, who put in him a position of authority. This made other officials jealous, and they set a trap for Daniel. They knew that Daniel would continue to pray to God, so they enticed the king to pass an edict that no one should pray to anyone but the king for 30 days lest he be thrown into a den of hungry lions. When Daniel was caught praying to God, he was, per the edict, thrown into the lion’s den. God, however, supernaturally closed the mouths of the lions and spared Daniel, to the king’s relief. God was honored through Daniel’s devotion to him, and the king saw that Daniel’s God was the one true God.
Jonah and the great fish (Jonah 1) – God told Jonah to go to Ninevah to show the people there that God loved them. Jonah was reluctant. God used a great fish – possibly a whale – to get Jonah’s attention. After being thrown off a ship caught in a storm, Jonah was swallowed by the fish. Three days in the fish’s belly gave time for Jonah to think about the people of Ninevah and God’s plan – for Jonah and the Ninevites. After the three days, the fish spit Jonah on shore – and he preached God’s love to the people of Ninevah. God has a way of getting our attention when he has a job for us to do.
David and the wild animals (1 Samuel 17:34-35a) – When the shepherd boy, David, was preparing to face the Philistine giant, Goliath, he made a startling statement to Saul. As he made his case for going up against the enemy, David said: “Your servant was tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and took a lamb from the flock, I went out after him and attacked him, and rescued it from his mouth; and when he rose up against me, I seized him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear…” David had proved his bravery, and he was equally successful in helping to protect the Israelites – killing the fierce giant with a slingshot and stone. When God has a job for us to do, he prepares us!
